Jishudō – the Way of Self Mastery

Led by Sensei Dan Duguay (Shotokan Karate & Ki Aikido)

Martial arts are universally – and often almost exclusively – associate with physical benefits such as increased flexibility, strength, and balance. Yet, the intangible benefits are arguably as important: improved confidence, mental resilience, and emotional regulation. Jishudō - The Way of Self Mastery – is a practice designed to cultivate the mental benefits of martial arts.

Informed by leading research on the mental benefits of martial arts, shaped by almost two decades of practical martial arts experience, and refined by lived experiences with leading mental health programs, Jishudō is rooted in the core principles of martial arts that integrate the body and mind, and is comprised of complimentary practices including martial meditation (martial arts without movement), individual movement work, and non-confrontational partner work. Although Jishudō is rooted in martial arts training, it does not involve self-defence movements like falling or throwing. Jishudō is practiced in a supportive and cooperative group-based environment.

During Jishudō sessions, participants gain a theoretical understanding of the bodymind principles core to martial arts, which are then embodied through experiential learning and focused exercises.

Jishudō offers a unique blending of martial-arts philosophy and mental discipline practices to improve mental and emotional well-being. It enhance’s one's understanding of bodymind balance and what can disrupt this equilibrium. It also cultivates and strengthens one’s ability to maintain, retain, and regain mental balance, improving the foundation for being more present, mindful, and engaged in all aspects of daily life.
